Departure from Turtle Beach

Your kayaking adventure begins at Turtle Beach, located on the southern end of Siesta Key. Known for its relaxed vibe and uncrowded shores, Turtle Beach serves as the perfect launchpad for your journey.

When you arrive at Turtle Beach, you’ll park at the Blind Pass Rd parking lot near the public boat ramp. Kayak or SUP rentals can be found at the launch site where rental companies are setup with signs to help you find the right one. If you rent with Kayaking SRQ, they will provide you with an easy-to-read map and help you launch your kayak.

As you push off from the shore and start paddling down Blind Pass, take a moment to soak in the beauty of your surroundings. The gentle lapping of the waves against your kayak and the warm sun on your skin create a sense of tranquility that’s hard to find anywhere else.

En Route to Palmer Point Beach

Once you reach the end of Blind Pass where the osprey nest at marker 17 sits, you’ll take a right into Little Sarasota Bay where you’ll be treated to stunning views of the Jim Neville Marina Preserve. Be sure to take your time and explore the different landmarks along the way.

Paddle Through Mangrove Tunnels

Jim Neville Marina Preserve is a protected area encompassing coastal habitats such as mangrove forests, seagrass beds, and tidal flats. Some of the intricate mangrove tunnels have been closed off by storms over time.

However, there is one mangrove tunnel that is still easy to navigate with only one way in and one way out. Kayaking through this mangrove tunnel will give you a unique perspective of its natural beauty.

Explore The Old Mote Marina Shark Tank

As you exit the mangrove tunnel and continue towards Palmer Point Beach, be sure to make a stop where Midnight Pass once opened to the Gulf. There you can kayak into the Old Mote Marine shark tanks.

These huge underwater tanks, once used to study the behavior of sharks at Mote Marine, were shut down in 1982 when Midnight Pass was closed from the Gulf. The shark tanks have since been taken over by mangrove forests where only the edge of the tanks can be seen sitting above the water.

Wildlife Encounters

Keep an eye out for marine life as you make your way along the bay. Siesta Key is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including dolphins, manatees, and various species of birds. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a sea turtle or two swimming beneath the surface. Remember to observe wildlife from a respectful distance and avoid disturbing their natural habitat.

Arrival at Palmer Point Beach

After paddling past the Jim Neville Marine Preserve, you’ll arrive at Palmer Point Beach, a secluded oasis nestled at the southern tip of Siesta Key. Here, you can relax and unwind on the pristine shores, far away from the crowds.

Palmer Point Beach offers the perfect setting for a beach picnic. Spread out a towel, unpack your snacks, and bask in the sunshine as you listen to the sound of the waves crashing against the shore. Just be sure to clean up after yourself and dispose of any trash responsibly to help preserve the natural beauty of Palmer Point Beach.

Take a refreshing dip in the clear blue waters, or simply lounge on the sand and watch the world go by.

From unique scallop shells to intricate sand dollars, each find will serve as a reminder of your kayaking adventure to this coastal paradise.

Planning for the Journey

Before you set out on your kayaking expedition, it’s essential to make sure you’re properly prepared. Here’s what you need to know:

Packing Essentials

Packing the right gear can make all the difference in ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable day on the water.

  • Be sure to bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  • Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
  • Use a waterproof backpack to keep your belongings dry.
  • Wear clothing that you don’t mind getting wet, like a bathing suit and quick-dry athletic wear.
  • You may also want to consider bringing sturdy water shoes or sandals.
  • Bring a waterproof case for your GoPro or phone so that you can capture your journey above and below the water’s surface.
  • Bring a camera mount that can be clipped to your kayak to capture the journey while still being able to fully enjoy your surroundings along the way.

Finding Your Vessel

If you don’t have your own kayak, don’t worry—there are plenty of rental options available on Siesta Key.

  • Look for outfitters that offer single or tandem kayaks, depending on whether you prefer flying solo or paddling with a friend.
  • Your rental will include paddles and a life jacket.
  • Use a rental company located on Turtle Beach to make it easy to gear up and get out on the water in no time.

I recommend using Kayaking SRQ from my own experience. They provide rentals, as well as, guided tours from group or private paddle tours to kayak fishing tours. The friendly staff will help you launch your kayak and provide a trail map with clear instructions of places to stop along the way.

Navigation Tips

  • While it’s tempting to paddle straight towards your destination, don’t be afraid to explore off the beaten path.
  • Pay attention to landmarks such as the osprey nest at marker 17 or distant buildings to help you stay on track.

Kayaking from Turtle Beach to Palmer Point Beach in Siesta Key is an experience that promises adventure, relaxation, and unforgettable memories. Whether you’re seeking solitude or sharing the journey with friends, the beauty of Siesta Key’s coastline is sure to leave a lasting impression. So grab your paddle, embrace the spirit of exploration, and let the serenity of the sea guide you on your next outdoor adventure.
