Set Jetting is all about visiting locations that have been featured in movies and TV shows, and there are plenty of amazing beach destinations in the U.S. that fit the bill. From the tropical paradise of Hawaii to the sun-soaked shores of South Carolina, there’s plenty of options for beach-loving Set Jetters. Here’s a look at some of the top Set-Jetting beach destinations and what to see when you get there.

The Truman Show

Modica Market

Modica Market in Central Square Seaside, Florida was used as a filming location for “The Truman Show.” It was depicted as a small grocery store where the main character often buys groceries and has significant events in the plot. The market is an iconic location in Seaside and played an important role in the movie.

The Truman House

The Truman House located at 31 Natchez Street in Seaside, Florida served as the primary filming location for the movie The Truman Show. It’s featured in many of the most memorable scenes including the movies iconic phrase, “Good morning! And in case I don’t see ya — good afternoon, good evening and good night!”

Ruskin Place

The Ruskin Place was used in The Truman Show for various scenes, including Truman’s hometown, workplace, and town center. Its vivid colors and architectural beauty added to the film’s idyllic atmosphere, creating an immersive and engaging movie experience.

Coleman Tower

The Coleman Tower sitting 20 feet above the beach played a vital role in the movie’s set design and was featured prominently throughout the film. The tower’s unique architecture and location helped to create the distinct look and feel of the world of The Truman Show.

The Gazebo

The Tupelo Street Gazebo in Seaside, Florida took center stage in one scene from The Truman Show when Truman is discovering the truth and drives circles around it.

The Post Office

The Post Office used in The Truman Show is one of the most photographed landmarks in Seaside.

Set-Jetting Destinations: Hawaii

Jurassic Park

The movie magic of Jurassic Park was brought to life in the lush tropical paradise of Hawaii almost three decades ago. Many of the filming locations are open for exploration. From the Limahuli Garden to the verdant valleys of Oahu’s Kualoa Ranch, the landscapes of Hawaii served as the perfect backdrop for Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster hit.

Manawaiopuna Falls in Kauai

The Manawaiopuna Falls, also known as Jurassic Falls, is a beautiful waterfall located in the Hanapepe Valley of Kauai, Hawaii. This is the location of where the main characters land on “Isla Nubar.”  The falls have also been featured in other movies and tv shows, including Tropic Thunder, Fantasy Island and The Amazing Race.  Today they are a popular tourist attraction only reachable by helicopter. 

Limahuli Garden

The Limahuli Garden and Preserve in Hawaii was used as a filming location for the raptor paddock in Jurassic Park. A Visitors Center now sits in the location of the raptor paddock. 

Kualoa Ranch

Kualoa Ranch on Oahu, Hawaii served as a filming location for numerous scenes in the first Jurassic Park movie including the Gallimimus stampede and the location of the fallen tree. This breathtaking ranch is now a popular tourist destination, offering tours of the filming locations and other activities for fans of the movie.

National Tropical Botanical Gardens

The National Tropical Botanical Garden in Kalaheo, Hawaii was used for several key scenes that required a lush and tropical backdrop. This includes the scene where Dr. Alan Grant and the children he is looking after discover broke dinosaur egg shells. 

Waikoko Forest

The iconic Jurassic Park entrance was filmed in Waikoko Forest in Kauai, Hawaii. You can find the location roughly 3.5 miles from the Keahua Arboretum, near the Kuilau Ridge Trail. While the road leading to the site is paved, it becomes a dirt road after the bridge at the arboretum.

Set-Jetting Destinations: Oregon

The Goonies is a classic adventure movie filmed on location in Cannon Beach, Oregon, Ecola State Park and Astoria, a town just 26 miles from Cannon Beach. You can still visit many of the landmarks used including Haystack Rock and the Goonies house. The coastal and forested scenery provided a perfect backdrop for the treasure hunt storyline.

Mouths House

The house that served as Clark “Mouth” Devereaux’s home in the opening scenes is located on Skyline Ave in Astoria, Oregon. It is private property so please be respectful.

The Goonies House

The iconic Goonies House located on 38th Street in Astoria, Oregon was the site of the most memorable scenes in the movie, including the “Truffle Shuffle” and the discovery of the treasure map. The house private property so please be respectful.

Datas House

The home of the character Data also located on 38th St in Astoria is the site for the popular zip lining scene when Data uses one of his inventive gadgets to zip line from his house to Mikey’s. Again, this is private property so please be respectful.

The Jailhouse

The Astoria county jailhouse now home to the Oregon Film Museum was the location where Jake Fratelli escaped from prison in the beginning of the movie. Visitors can tour the museum in 30 minutes or less and see the cell where some scenes were shot.

Astoria Coffee Co

Astoria Coffee Co. on 37th St sits at the crosswalk where Rosalita tries to cross the street as the Fratellis speed by her. 

Lower Columbia Bowl

The bowling alley on Marine Drive in Astoria is where Chunk sees the car chase through the window.  Lower Columbia Bowl is still operating as a bowling alley and you can see the glass where Chunk viewed the car chase from.

Flavel House Museum

While The Goonies pass by Mikey’s father – a museum curator – in the film, you can catch a glimpse of the historic Flavel House Museum located on 8th St. If you’re visiting Astoria, be sure to take a self-guided tour of this iconic location which takes roughly an hour to complete.

Ecola State Park

Indian Beach at Ecola State Park served as the backdrop for a few notable scenes in the movie. Specifically, the scene when The Goonies discover the entrance to the underground tunnels at the Lighthoues Lounge. It’s also where Chunk was held captive by the Fratellis.

Cannon Beach

Cannon Beach was the filming site for the 3rd Annual ORV Rally and where the Fratelli car chase came to an end.

Set-Jetting Beach Destinations: South Carolina

Outer Banks

The popular Netflix series Outer Banks is set in a picturesque coastal town with stunning landscapes and breathtaking views. However, most of the series was actually filmed in Shem Creek and Charleston, SC, rather than Outer Banks, NC.

The Wreck of the Richard and Charlene

The Wreck, a popular waterfront restaurant that served as the common Pogue hangout in the hit show Outer Banks, is located in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. The restaurant, known as The Wreck of the Richard and Charlene in real life, is open to the public where you can enjoy fresh seafood on the creek.  

The Kildare Island Surfboard Co.

In the show, the Kildare Island Surfboard Co was an antique store known as The Green Shutter. The building is located at 121 Pitt St. in the Old Village area of Mount Pleasant. The Old Village was the location for several other scenes including a block of condominiums that served as the Kildare County Sheriff’s Station and the Pitt Street Pharmacy. 

Mount Pleasant's Shem Creek

A significant portion of Outer Banks was filmed at Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant. This part of the city is a well-known attraction for visitors, offering picturesque sights, dining options by the creek, and various activities like kayaking, paddle boarding, and boating, representing the true spirit of the Outer Banks.

Geechie Seafood

Geechie Seafood in Mount Pleasant served as the location for Heyward’s Seafood restaurant in Outer Banks. Geechie Seafood is open to the public where visitors can enjoy fresh seafood sourced from the nearby Shem Creek. 

The Ben Silver Collection

Ben Silver Collection, where John B and Sarah stop on their day trip, is a real fashion store located in Charleston, SC. 

Morris Island Lighthouse

The Morris Island Lighthouse, found just off the coast of Folly Beach, served as the Redfield Lighthouse in Outer Banks. The lighthouse dates back to 1872 and is the tallest in South Carolina and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump is an iconic movie filmed mostly in Beaufort, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia that offered a more authentic backdrop for many of the scenes.

Set-Jetting Destination: Port Clyde, Maine

Marshall Point Lighthouse

Marshall Point Lighthouse, located in Port Clyde, Maine is the location for one of the most memorable scenes where Forrest ends his run across the country.

Set-Jetting Destination: Savannah, GA

Chippewa Square

Chippewa Square in Savannah, Georgia served as the location for the famous park bench scene where Forrest Gump tells his life story. The actual bench was located on the north side facing Bull St., but has since been moved to the Savannah History Museum.

Set-Jetting Destination: Beaufort, SC

Lucy Point Creek

The majority of the shrimp boat scenes in the movie were filmed just over the bridge from Beaufort at Lucy Point Creek on Lady’s Island. The scenic marshes and waterways provided the perfect backdrop.

Fripp Island and Hunting Island State Park

Several scenes from the movie “Forrest Gump” were filmed in Fripp Island where Forrest and Lieutenant Dan are shown “in Vietnam.” Hunting Island State Park was used to film the scene where Forrest and Bubba are shown arriving in Vietnam.

Leo Carillo Beach

Leo Carillo Beach in Malibu, California, was featured in the movie “Grease” in the beginning when Sandy and Danny first meet over Summer break.

The Notebook

El Matador Beach

El Matador Beach in Malibu, California was used in the 2004 movie, The Notebook, for the “bird’ scene. The beach’s beautiful scenery and rugged cliffs make it an ideal spot for a romantic movie.

Twilight

Indian Beach

Indian Beach in Ecola State Park, Oregon was used as a filming location for the Twilight movie due to its rugged coastline and stunning views. It served as the location for “La Push Beach” for several iconic scenes from the movie.

JAWS

Martha's Vineyard

The first JAWS movie, directed by Steven Spielberg, was primarily filmed on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. Many of the beach scenes were filmed on the island’s South Beach and Main Street, which was converted to look like an Amity Island street. The Village of Menemsha was also used for several other scenes.

JAWS III

Navarre Beach + Okaloosa Island

Many of the beach scenes for Jaws II were filmed off Route 98 in Navarre Beach, Florida. The bar featured in Jaws II was Hog’s Breath Saloon in Okaloosa Island’s Shanty Town located between Fort Walton and Destin, Florida. Hog’s Breath Saloon moved to 541 Route 98 in Destin. The Destin location was sold in 2020 and is now Beach Camp Brewpub
